Administering the Anesthesia
To begin, our vet will place an intravenous catheter that allows us to administer injectable anesthesia and fluids directly into your pet's bloodstream.
Your Pet Will Be Monitored
A vet tech will observe your pet throughout the entire procedure while they are under anesthesia. This team member will monitor your pet's breathing, blood pressure, and heart rate. If any adverse reactions to the anesthesia occur, our vet will take immediate action to ensure your pet's safety. Monitoring continues during the recovery phase, as adverse effects can arise even after the procedure. Rest assured, your pet will never be alone during or after the procedure, providing you with peace of mind.
Preparing Your Pet for Anesthesia
Fasting is essential for your pet before surgery. Ensure that your pet's last meal occurs the night before the procedure. If you usually leave food out for your pet, remove the bowl 12 hours prior to the appointment. Failing to fast could lead to vomiting during the procedure, which can result in aspiration pneumonia—a serious complication. Your pet can have water the night before surgery, but please take it away a few hours before the procedure.
Caring for Your Pet After Surgery
Once you bring your pet home from the veterinary clinic, they will likely still feel drowsy. It's best to set up a quiet area for them to rest, away from other pets, children, and noise. Your pet may not feel hungry immediately, which is normal. When they are ready to eat, offer small meals. Keep an eye on the wound site, and if the vet has placed a cone on your pet to prevent them from licking or scratching, ensure they do not interfere with it.
